Новый род для десяти лепоринусов в семействе малоротых.

Бывший Leporinus, а сейчас Megaleporinus conirostris

Новый род Megaleporinus образован в семействе малоротых или аностомовых (Anostomidae), с перемещением в него 10 видов, раньше относимых с лепоринусам: Leporinus brinco, L. conirostris, L. elongatus, H. garmani, L. macrocephalus, L. muyscorum, L. obtusidens, L. piavussu, L. reinhardti, и L. trifasciatus, обитающих в бассейнах рек Orinoco и Tocantins, в Бразилии.

Новый род описан на основе особенностей строения челюстей и окраса, подтверждён подробными исследованими ДНК.
